NCAL at Joel Hawley's Shop, Berkeley:
June 1998 Meeting Photos
Frank Ford, 6/14/98; Photos by FF, 6/14/98

We had the usual pre-meeting schmooze time and swap:

Ervin Somogyi gave us all a lesson in applying wood binding in the traditional Spanish method:

Rosewood binding is strong stuff and needs lots of clamping pressure.

Here, Brian Burns (r) and Randy Allen look on as Ervin starts to wrap the binding with heavy cotton cord:

Ervin's technique is strong and sure as he applies glue to the binding and purfling and winds the cord to apply clamping pressure:

In about an hour, he had the entire back bound and clamped with mitered purfling and rosewood binding. It was a good reminder of the effectiveness of the simple traditional methods!

Thanks, Ervin.

Chuck Erikson showed off his 1930 Gibson Florentine banjo with the new reproduction neck made by Renee Karnes:

Another fine job, Renee!
