I first saw this tool in action in a Dan Erlewine video "Bellyaches" where he used it to measure the internal angle of a guitar X-brace to make a new bridge plate. He held it inside, and simply opened it against the braces, lifting it out to transfer the angle to his work piece.

I made mine of ebony, fastened with a split rivet:
