A nationally recognized guitar maker, the owner of a small factory, once told me that it's "not possible to use a plastic hammer for fretting." Oops. I've used a hammer just like this one on every fret job I've done for about 30 years now. . .

When interviewing a new candidate for my tool collection, I look for a light weight hammer with the hardest yellow plastic faces I can find, like this little Stanley:
